AFRICA

Africa Fashion Week inspired me to love my roots.
So I thought I'd capture my new energy with Jekkah.
Jekkah is a clothing brand in the city which aspires to share a vibrant love for prints.
There was no-one better to do this with than my big sister René Daniella.
With the magical skills of Melissa Gibbs and Naomi Alabii this vision came to light.

HOW HAS AFRICA INSPIRED JEKKAH?

Jekkah was born in The Gambia so it was the biggest inspiration for the brand.
We aspire to inspire the culture of Africa in the most respectful and positive light.

WHAT SPARKED THE CREATION OF JEKKAH?

The idea came from my business partner and school friend Kamil.
Having grown up in The Gambia and having a family business in African textiles he used to bring fun and colourful pyjama trousers when he visited in the school holidays. Everyone was fascinated and mesmerised by them, so we knew that there was some magic in the prints.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

We are inspired by culture and colours. I seek inspiration from Artists.
We love Natty, who shares a similar passion to Jekkah.
We support the charity, ERASE which does phenomenal work in The Gambia.
Natty is an incredible Artist and he has definitely been an influence on our passion.

WHAT DOES JEKKAH AIM TO PROMOTE?

Jekkah brings wholesomeness to your life.
 We support Africa by providing jobs in The Gambia;
where the vast majority of our clothing is manufactured.
We can only grow if we support those who are around us;
So we support ERASE who we feel promotes helping others.
Our clothes have an identity and that identity is Africa - we are not a soundbite.

FINAL WORDS?

"This collaboration has been our most enjoyable to date!
Two of the bubbliest, funnest girls I have had the pleasure of meeting.
And they don’t look too bad in our clothes too."
- Petros, Jekkah Clothing.

It has been an insightful Summer working with René creating magic together.
I'd like to think I am inspired by the way she embraces being a woman.
And although she has many features which I want to reflect about myself,
I found that whilst doing this shoot I gained an understanding of our individualities as people.
I feel that as women we spend so much time comparing instead of celebrating.
There is so much besides beauty to be celebrated,
This collaboration allowed me to grow and recognise the flaws which make me, me.

If you spend your days staring at pixels on Instagram,
then I am certain you would've come across Underground_NYC.
His eccentric vision has taken over, inspiring people to see the beauty in the underground.

After "sliding into his dm's" we connected to create some magic.
It was only right to fill up his lens with my big sister, Rene.
To you, Own By Femme.

We weren't instructed to follow a look in this shoot so we were free to wear what we felt.
Prior to the shoot, I was at an ORS workshop for young girls so I wanted to look fun yet smart.
Despite being two curly girls with a love for big hair, it's always fun to see how different our style is.

I like having statement pieces or a colour that makes something simple pop.
Some days I go all out with vibrant colours yet some I like being in jeans and a grey tee.
Once I stopped following trends and creating my own, I didn't worry so much about my look.

I'd say I am inspired by Solange Knowles but that doesn't mean I copy her looks.
I just admire how she clashes prints and colours yet some days makes a statement with the most simple garments. It's all about being creative and being true to yourself.
Don't worry if people around you critique your bold trainers or your hat that you always wear.
If it makes you happy, go with it and love it. Be free with it!

One of my inspirations is actually my big sister, Rene.
She defines being fun, vibrant and free with who you are.
So I thought I'd ask her what she feels about fashion.

Own By Femme, own it and embrace it.
I live by that, so I love to wear garments which really highlight my figure.
I love an outfit that is going to be bold and captivating.
Prints and colours are what I surround my style around as they reflect my personality.
I love to clash with it all too, there are no rules with fashion.
I wouldn't say I am inspired by a particular person, but more so my mood.
That is a big influence on my style as well as one off pieces.
Although, I cannot live without a waist belt and comfy but cute heels.
I'd rather buy a plane ticket than spend a lot of money on clothes,
so I have really found a love for vintage and thrift stores.
You can find some of the most unique items there for the cheapest prices.

CREATING YOUR OWN STYLE
Picture
Your style should be fun, free and a reflection of who you are.
Before I learnt this, I conformed to everything that was in trend.
My Mum has always been a big influence in my style,
as when I was younger she would dress me up in Baby Phat and so many American brands.
I loved how cool I looked but people in my school would laugh at me for my "urban" look.
From then, I started to wear what everyone else did just to feel accepted.

-

I had the opportunity to shoot with Joshua Brathwaite in Notting Hill on a Froday!
I always love meeting photographers, they all have a unique story.
Joshua loves to create art or "magic" as he called it.
Before we met, me and my cousin Taffy scrolled through his Instagram to refresh my memory of his work.
I noticed, I was different from his muses.
I began to worry as my style was a lot more colourful and vibrant in comparison to everyone else.
I was reminded that change is good and we all have our own look.
Don't try to change it.
Picture
After experimenting with almost every style possible,
I found a deep love for African prints.
They express my heritage and my culture without following the traditional look.
The bold and bright colours make such a statement that I adore.
If I had to describe my style I'd say it's a mixture of Solange Knowles and Hilary Banks!

-

My favourite places to find prints are Forever 21 and TK Maxx,
Especially since they aren't expensive.
For me, the best way to wear prints is to either mix and match
or have one key statement piece and wear bright colours with it.
I did just that with this outfit as it was this Kimono's first day out I wanted it to be the main piece.
I bought the yellow dress for £9 from Forever 21 and paired it all up with my favourite accessories.
Picture
You are your own muse so dress yourself up in pretty garments.
Each day is a new day to be free with what you wear.
Even though I am a student, I like to feel good in what I wear each day.
If I wear things which I don't feel comfortable in, it is reflected on my mood.
Don't hold onto clothes either, it's refreshing to donate old clothes making room for new ones.

A place where I love to shop is my Mum's wardrobe,
everything is free and most likely never been worn!
Don't worry about what people say about you or your style.
It is about your happiness! Embrace who you are.
